Current Gauge Setup

To setup a current gauge is a substantial effort, since it involves carefully creating multiple calibrations for the same rig, with speeds ranging from the slowest speed you expect to troll to the fastest speed you expect to troll. For best results, these calibrations should be measured on a calm day with no current or with a known consistent current speed and direction using the GPS with “Adjust Speed for Water Current”.

First, determine an appropriate rig to use for the current gauge. If you use them, a downrigger makes a good speed gauge. Or, use a heavy jig or a lure with a heavy sinker. It makes sense to use a rig that you intend to actually use while trolling. An unweighted diving lure will not work.

The Setup panel collects the calibrations for the same rig and different speeds that together make up a speed gauge. All the calibrations of a gauge have the same gauge name in the Gauge attribute, and they each should have the same values in all other attributes except Speed.

Use an Existing Gauge

To use an existing gauge, enter the name of the Gauge, and press the search icon . All calibrations with that Gauge name will be retrieved and sorted by speed.

Press the Graph menu icon to show the profiles of the calibrations, and evaluate whether your measurements are reasonable.

Create a Gauge

If you already have appropriate calibrations, you can set their Gauge fields to create a new gauge. Or, to create a new gauge from new calibrations, enter the Gauge name and other attributes into the Gauge Setup panel, and press the Add button. Trolling Angles will prompt for the speed, will create a new calibration with the same attributes, and then will show the Calibrations panel. At this point, adjust your boat’s speed and measure line angles for the new calibrations.
